Comparing the burden of COVID-19 to seasonal flu: what does the data say?

Posted on Jan 21, 2022

In England and Germany, hospitalisations data show that the comparative burden of COVID-19 is far greater than seasonal flu. Hospitalisations due to COVID-19 are far greater than those for influenza - both currently and historically. Germany's COVID hospitalisations are down by 62% from this time last year but remain significantly higher than levels typically seen for flu. In week 1 of 2022 England recorded 19.03 hospital admissions per 100,000, 2.6 times more than was seen at this stage in the 2017/18 severe flu season.
